Bailey’s Box is an initiative created in memory of Bailey Jenkins, with a focus on starting conversations, strengthening connection, and reminding people that support is always available—even when the warning signs aren’t clear. Through Bailey’s story and Bailey’s Box, we aim to honour his life by helping others feel seen, supported, and less alone.

A Life Changed Forever

In April 2024, my partner and I received the most devastating news- our son was found deceased. He had taken his own life. It marked the beginning of a journey we never imagined we would have to face.

About Bailey

Our son’s name is Bailey. I say is because his spirit remains very much alive within our family, and in everything we do to honour him. He was 18 years old and had recently moved to Canberra to begin university after achieving an outstanding ATAR. He loved animals and had a strong sense of adventure- he enjoyed exploring new places and meeting new people. Above all, he loved his family and his dog Prince.

The Days Before

Bailey had no known history of mental health concerns. In the days leading up to his death, he had sustained a head injury. He had a loving girlfriend, family photos displayed proudly in his room, and Easter eggs set aside for his little sister.

We were due to meet him at a Scottish festival south of Sydney that very weekend, and he already had train tickets booked for a trip away with his girlfriend. By all accounts, he was excited about the future and looking forward to what lay ahead.

His death came completely out of the blue, with no warning signs that we were about to lose him.

The Shock and Aftermath

The shock, confusion, and heartbreak of that night remain with us. In an instant, our lives became divided into a “before” and an “after.” A life without your child is never how it is meant to be, and it was not the future we had imagined. The questions it raised continue to shape our lives every day.

Who Bailey Was to Us and His Community

Bailey shared an incredibly close bond with his mum. No matter which team or club they played for, they were always there to support one another. Bailey could often be found on the sidelines at Coffs United with his beloved dog, Prince, cheering on family, friends and teammates.

A Life of Care and Kindness

He was the kind of person who showed up for others without hesitation. He cared deeply about people and was always looking for ways to help. Bailey’s instinct was to stand up for anyone who didn’t have a voice—even gently telling us not to scold a café worker when we were short-changed on a hot drink. That was simply who he was.

The Purpose of the Mental Health Round

The Mental Health Round at Coffs United is a meaningful way to honour Bailey and everything he stood for. It provides an opportunity to start important conversations, check in on one another, and remind ourselves that mental health deserves the same attention and care as physical health. When we injure our foot or hamstring, we seek treatment and support. Our minds deserve that same level of care.

Honouring Bailey’s Legacy – Bailey’s Box

If Bailey’s story encourages even one person to reach out for help, seek support, or check in on someone they care about, then his legacy will continue to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Through this round, we hope to strengthen a community that looks out for one another, embraces open conversations, and prioritises wellbeing in all its forms.
